Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday–it’s about gratitude and community, two of my favorite aspects of being human. This year I’m also thinking about it through an additional lens.

Back in college we read the book Illusions by Richard Bach as part of a communications class curriculum.

This beautiful, slight book stuck with me. I reread it over the years, had quotes from the book in highly visible places, and gifted it to friends.

And then I forgot about it.

The other day I ran across a visual I’d created with my favorite quote from the book. It stopped me in my tracks.

Every person, all the events of your life are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you.

I absolutely believe that we draw people and events to us.

In what’s been a challenging year, I have not been as mindful as I can be, as I should be, of what I do with them. And that means that perhaps I’ve taken some for granted.

So this Thanksgiving I feel not just gratitude, but also a recommitment to doing well with what I call into my life. To not taking any of it for granted. That, of course, includes each of you.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you–whether or not you’re in the US, whether or not you celebrate, I wish a happy day of gratitude to you.
