It’s time for me to practice what I preach.

I counsel leaders regularly to truly take time to disconnect from work. It role models the behavior you should want from your team. And if you’ve built a strong and aligned team, you should be able to check out for some time off without the business missing a beat.

It’s been a heavy year personally, made heavier by the school shooting in Evergreen, CO, where we live and where my nephew is a sophomore at the high school—thankfully he and his friends are safe.

As hard as it is to leave our community when it’s hurting, my husband Christopher Wilkins and I are heading out on an adventure we booked just six weeks ago. By the grace of United Airlines, in <24 hours we will be in Finnish Lapland.

Since I started my business 6 years ago I’ve never really disconnected—it feels too risky as a business owner. But I need a break, and know I’ll come back ready to continue to do the work I love.

To that end, I’m actually going to delete LinkedIn from my phone before we get to Finland. I don’t trust myself to not get sucked in. And I want to spent time with the aurora and reindeer.

So I’ll see you all in a few weeks and look forward to catching up then. In the meantime, please give your loved ones a little extra love.
