Friday Leadership Truth-Telling
“I’m tried of trying to make everyone happy.”
That’s what I heard the other day from one of the leaders I work with.
Actually, I’ve heard that from a number of leaders lately.
My guidance to that first leader I’ve since repeated to the others:
- Your job is not to make everyone happy.
- Your job is to make the right decisions for the business.
- Your job is then to communicate those decisions with clarity and care.
If you do that, your house is clean.
Let go of your attachment to how you want them to react.
You are not responsible for their reactions.
And anyways, you can’t possibly make everyone happy.
You are not ice cream. You are not a taco.
Make the right decisions for the business.
Communicate with clarity and care.
Let go of your attachment to the outcome. You do not own their reaction.
And then go eat a taco. You deserve it.
