What’s my guidance to leaders who have to deliver a tough message?
Delivering tough messages isn’t easy, but it’s your responsibility as a leader.
It’s tempting to sugarcoat or dodge, but that just adds to the mess later on.
So my guidance is π
When you have to deliver a tough message, do it with clarity and care.
Clarity means:
- Be direct. Being clear prevents confusion and further issues.
- Be concise. Don’t over explain. You do that to make yourself feel better.
Care means:
- Be kind. Choose your words carefully and avoid hyperbole.
- Show empathy. Acknowledge and leave space for their emotions.
Once you’ve done that, your side of the street is clean.
You can’t control how others react. Their response? It’s on them, not you.
Here’s why: Everyone processes and reacts differently. Their baggage, their context – it’s what influences the response.
Instead of focusing on reactions, focus on delivery:
- Be Prepared: Know your message and how you want to say it.
- Stay Composed: It might be tough, but staying calm helps ease tension.
- Be Open: Allow space for feedback or questions. Listen deeply. Respond clearly.
π To all leaders out there: when delivering tough messages, remember this β you can only control your delivery, not the reaction. As long as you deliver with clarity and care, you’ve done your part.
