You Can Learn a Lot in 4 Years

You can learn a lot in 4 years.

In my case, I’ve learned a lot about what I want my business to be and not be.

4 years ago yesterday I filed paperwork with the State of Colorado to say “Yes! I am going to do this thing that scares me and excites me in equal measure.”

4 years ago I said yes to entrepreneurship, to risk and reward, to ups and downs, to exhilaration and uncertainty.

I said yes to:

• Transformative work with amazing clients.
• Coaching leaders committed to their growth and development.
• Engagements where we both select each other for the journey ahead.
• Partnerships and collaboration with fellow experts who challenge me and lift me up.
• My own growth and expansion of my expertise.

Along the way, I learned quite a bit about myself and my business.

I learned because I paid close attention.

• I paid attention to what filled my cup and left me energized.
• I paid attention to what drained my energy and felt like a chore.

To what I wanted more of and less of.

And along the way, I started to say no.

I started to say no to the work that I COULD do but didn’t engage me. I reminded myself over and over of the adage “Be careful of what you’re competent at, or it could become what you end up doing.”

Sometimes I passed on work even though the revenue would have been nice. That’s scary as hell.

But I learned to operate with a mindset of abundance, not scarcity. Still hard sometimes, but a belief I do my best to come back to.

All of that learning led to transformative experiences over the past 8 months, with my collaborators and a few incredible clients and leaders.

So as I kick off my 4th year in business, I’m intentionally and publicly making some shifts in the focus of the business.

I’m going to focus my energy on the work that is at the intersection of what I excel at, what my clients need, and what brings me joy.

I’ll share more later this week, putting it out there, which is scary as hell. But I have to put it out there for it to manifest. To quote Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” I just quoted the sports ball. It may be the end of days.

And I’m pretty damn excited about it.

I waited until today to share this as I was on a long-awaited vacation for the past 11 days, hiking and spending time with the dearest of friends. My heart is full.
